Steps to Cleaning the Refrigerator Coils

Does your compressor seem to be running for longer periods of time? Have you noticed a spike in your energy bill? The fix to your problem may be simpler than you think: Clean your refrigerator’s condenser coils!

When refrigerator condenser coils are clogged with dirt, dust, and pet hair, the compressor is forced to work harder and longer. This can greatly impact the efficiency of your refrigerator, causing the compressor to run longer and cool less efficiently.

Fortunately, cleaning your refrigerator’s condenser coils is a simple task for do-it-yourselfers. Put it on the calendar to complete at least once a year or twice a year if you have pets that shed. Keep reading to find out just how to clean refrigerator coils—and how easy it is to help keep your fridge functioning at its peak.

What you’ll need:

Refrigerator

Vacuum cleaner with brush and crevice attachments
Paintbrush or other small brush

Steps to Cleaning the Refrigerator Coils
Disconnect. Shut off the circuit breaker remove the fuse or slide the refrigerator away from the wall as needed to remove the refrigerator's plug from the electrical outlet. Shut off water supply lines if equipped with ice maker or water dispenser.

Locate the condenser coils at the base of the fridge in front, behind a toe-grill that snaps off. If your fridge doesn’t have a toe-grill, you’ll find the condenser coils located on the back of the refrigerator. Condenser coils are metal tubes, wound in a U-shaped grid pattern. If the refrigerator’s coils are on the back, you’ll need to pull the fridge fully away from the wall to clean them.

Vaccume the coil.
With a plastic crevice or brush attachment, carefully vacuum dirt and dust wherever it is seen. Use care not to damage the fins or coil. A breach created in the coil will allow the refrigerant to escape and will likely result in an expensive repair.

Use a narrow paint brush to gently remove stubborn dirt and dust from the coil and fan if able to get sufficient access.

After the coils are sufficiently clean, reinstall the grille.

Plug in the refrigerator (or turn on the circuit breaker).

Slide the refrigerator back into position.

Have you noticed your refrigerator not cooling as well as it used to? Don’t panic. It could be a simple fix. The best thing to do is schedule a maintenance check-up with a professional Refrigerator Repair Services in Mumbai to assess the overall performance of the appliance. Doing this could help cut your electric bill by making your refrigerator run more efficiently. Doing a simple maintenance check could also extend the life of the appliance.
