Microwave Oven Repair Tips

“Heat it in the microwave oven!” This article helps you to how a microwave oven works, what frequently goes wrong, how to track microwave oven issues and what parts and tools you will require to solve it. It then offers easy step-by-step instructions for how to fix and service a microwave oven door, how to disassemble a microwave oven and how to check a temperature investigation. This article and tips are also linked to appliance controls repair, fan repair, electrical cord repair, and fuse repair.

How Does a Microwave Oven Function?

A microwave is a device for heating and cooking food very fast than a conventional oven. A magnetron inside the oven generates a beam of electromagnetic waves, called microwaves. The beam is reflected all over the microwave to warm up the food. The magnetron is powered by a transformer, capacitor (dangerous!) and diode, which turn to household AC  power into the high-voltage DC power that the magnetron requires. Controls inform the magnetron how long to continue on and at what power setting.

What is the problem with a microwave oven?

Luckily, microwave ovens are near without problems. Many issues may be solved by the owner. For example, the power cord can be damaged, the interlock switch, thermal cutout, fan, turntable motor, temperature probe, or a light bulb may need to be replaced, or the door may not close properly.

Caution!

Never try to service the magnetron in a microwave oven. This is highly dangerous.

How Can I identify an Issue With Microwave Oven?

a) If the microwave does not work properly, ensure the power supply is at the outlet and check the electrical cord. Check the fuse and replace it if defective. Also, verify that the door closes properly. Test and, if necessary, replace the fan.

b) If the oven does not cook or cooks only intermittently but the display is on, inspect the door interlock switch, the thermal cutout and the fan, and replace parts that fail the test.

c) If the oven continues to blow the fuses, check that there is no defective door latch or monitor switch.

d) If the carousel fails to rotate, inspect the plastic coupling under the tray. Verify the roller and ensure that the tray is at the rotation mechanism.

e) If you still have problems with the microwave, bring it to a repair center that operates on the microwave ovens.

Fix-It Tip

Microwave cases are generally secured together with tamper-resistant Torx screws. A special screwdriver or hex bit will be required to remove these fasteners. Be sure to get the right size as there are at least seven sizes. Make an impression of the screw with clay and bring it to a large hardware store or automobile parts store.

What do I need to fix my microwave oven?

You may find spare parts from the manufacturer or suppliers of the aftermarket. The tools you'll need to disassemble and test your microwave include:

Screwdrivers

Wrenches

Multimeter

What are the stages in microwave oven repair?

Service a microwave oven door:

Check the door for obvious issues, such as broken components.

Check and clean the door gasket on the front inner edge of the oven.

Use a gentle detergent in hot water; rinse and dry before use.

Check the door hinge to make sure it is undamaged.

Inspect the door latch on the outside and inside of the door to ensure smooth operation and that it is not blocked by baked foods.

Disassemble a microwave oven:

1) Turn off the microwave and remove any trays or carousels in the oven cavity. If the unit is integrated, remove the fasteners (usually on the bottom side of the cabinet) securing the unit and remove the microwave oven.

2) Rotate the unit on its back or side and detach screws or bolts that carry the housing to the frame.

3) Carefully remove the case and set it aside to gain access to the components inside the microwave.

4) Identify the capacitor (refer to owner's manual) and ensure not to touch it. The capacitors hold an electrical charge after the device has been disconnected.

5) Inspect and clean switches and other simple components as necessary. Do not interfere with the magnetron (probably embedded in a secondary enclosure).

6) Test the power cord, fan, fuse, latch and other equipment components.

7) Reassemble and check the microwave oven.

Test a microwave oven temperature probe:

(The temperature probes have two ends: a sensor end that measures the temperature and a connection end which provides the results to the microwave.)

1) Place the temperature probe sensor in one cup of warm water.

2) Set the multimeter to measure resistance (RX1, or resistance times 1 scale).

3) Place the multimeter test tips on each side of the temperature transducer connector. The resistance (in ohms) must be higher than zero but lower than infinity. When infinite, the temperature probe does not send a signal to the microwave; replace the probe with an identical part.

4) If the temperature sensor is correct, it may be necessary to change the control board inside the microwave. Bring the microwave oven to a service store for repair.

Fix-It Tip

Microwave ovens are heating devices ranging from 500 to 1500 watts. Ensure there is sufficient ventilation space around a microwave to keep it relatively fresh. Manufacturers typically suggest a minimum of two inches of space behind and adjacent to the microwave oven. Check the unit owner manual for further details.
